What is Nexium?

generic canadian nexium

Nexium is a medication belonging to the class of drugs called antacids, i.e. drugs helping to prevent excessive production of gastric acid that can be manifested in heartburns and abdominal discomfort. Antacids are also commonly referred to as proton-pump inhibitors. It is administered to the patients suffering from dyspepsia, ulcer and other lesions of the lining of the digestive tract caused by the abnormal amount of gastric acid secretion.

Drug Description

Nexium is a second generation proton pump inhibitor with increased efficiency that helps to reduce the excessive production of gastric acid in patients suffering from such conditions as GORD/GERD (gastroesophageal disease), duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, PUD (peptic ulcer disease), dyspepsia, and heartburns.

The mechanisms are explained by the drug is an inhibitor of ATPase, the enzyme which is responsible for the secretion of gastric acid. If the patient is exposed to the effects of gastric acid on the esophagus this can lead to permanent damage to the latter. Hence, timely introduction of antacids like Nexium and other pharmacological products based on esomeprazole is indispensable in patients with abnormal amounts of the gastric acid formation.

How to Use It?

Nexium is taken orally. The tablet should be swallowed whole with liquid. The tablets must not be chewed or crushed in the mouth. For the treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis take 40mg 1 time per day for the period of 4 weeks. An additional 4-week course of the treatment is recommended in cases where after the first course the symptoms of esophagitis persist. Prevention of relapse in patients with healed esophagitis presupposes 20mg of Nexium once a day. For the symptomatic treatment of GERD take Nexium 20mg once a day. If after 4 weeks of treatment the symptoms do not disappear it is necessary to undertake further examination of the patient.

Nexium is also prescribed in combination with appropriate antibiotic therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori and the treatment of duodenal ulcers associated with this type of bacteria, prevention of relapse of peptic ulcers in patients with PUD in the quantity of 20mg for 7 days.

Safety Precautions

For the patients with renal insufficiency and elderly patients, the dose adjustment is required. For the patients with severe hepatic insufficiency, the dose should not exceed 20mg / day.

If you experience any alarming symptoms (e.g., spontaneous weight loss, frequent vomiting, dysphagia, vomiting of blood), as well as the presence of gastric ulcers (or suspected peptic ulcer) the possibility of malignancy should be ruled out, because in certain cases the treatment with esomeprazole can lead to the suppression of symptoms and thus delay the correct diagnosis. Patients taking the drug for an extended period (especially more than 1 year) should be under regular medical supervision.
